Beach house tours draw to a close
      If you haven’t toured the Susan Castor Beach House, you have until Monday, Sept. 6, to see it. Admission is $5 per person, with $4 going to the Port Aransas Education Foundation. The last series of tours will be offered from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 2, through Monday. After Monday the home will be closed to the public.

Reception to feature ‘Man Alive’
      Stop by The Art Center for the Islands for the First Friday art reception tomorrow, Sept. 3. The public is invited to meet the artists, socialize and enjoy the exhibit, live music and refreshments from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the art center, 323 N. Alister St. The September exhibit will feature “Man Alive!” a group show.

Pool to open Labor Day
      “Walk, don’t run,” to the Port Aransas Community Park pool, 700 Clark Parkway, for the annual Labor Day Splash. The City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department will open the pool that Monday, Sept. 6, when it’s normally closed, and discount the price for the holiday.

      Comedy and worship come together at the First Baptist Church’s Sunday services on Sept. 12. Guest speaker Scott Davis will address “Hope through Hilarity” with music and humor during the 11 a.m. service at the church, 200 N. Fall PAST to begin Sept. 10
      The Port Aransas Swim Team will continue with practices and competitions this fall. Practices will begin on Friday, Sept. 10, and run through the state swim meet in Frisco in January. Swimmers will meet on Mondays and Fridays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Port Aransas Community Pool, 700 Clark Parkway.

      Parrot Heads of Port Aransas will discuss plans for the Wings Over Port A: A Beach Ball at their monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. The Ferguson-Johns will host the meeting at their home, 612 Lantana Dr. This will be the final full-membership planning meeting before the ball, to be held the weekend of Oct. 8-10.

Garrett retires after 18 years with city
      Pat Garrett is retiring after 18 years employment with the City of Port Aransas. Garrett first was hired by the city as custodian in 1992. After one year, she moved on to become a receptionist at city hall for two and a half years. She then was promoted to the position of executive assistant to the city manager, and she has held that spot ever since.

Cops continue suicide, gun investigations
      A Port Aransas police investigation into the June 1 hanging death of Sherry Black Lancaster has ended, but a Texas Rangers investigation is continuing, police Executive Lt. Darryl Johnson said this week, and another investigation into two air gun shootings is also still going on.
